Whether you are seeking a further understanding of yourself, the world around you, or struggling with a mental health diagnosis, counseling may be the experience for you. Counseling can take place individually, with couples, with children or with families. I use a variety of counseling techniques depending on each individual's needs. Some techniques used in therapy include, but are not limited to, Play therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Art Therapy, Creative Writing, Family Systems approaches and Psychotherapy.
Art Therapy is defined by the American Art Therapy Association as:
a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client’s functioning and his or her sense of personal well-being. Art therapy practice requires knowledge of visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms) and the creative process, as well as of human development, psychological, and counseling theories and techniques.
Art therapy helps people resolve conflicts, improve interpersonal skills, manage problematic behaviors, reduce negative stress, and achieve personal insight. Art therapy also provides an opportunity to enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of art making. www.arttherapy.org, 2014
Because sometimes words are too challenging or just not enough! For more information about the art therapy process please contact me.
Art Therapy Assessments
During an art therapy assessment you may be asked to draw a series of drawings using provided media, or you may be asked to make art spontaneously.
The assessment involves observations of the art making process as well as the content and quality seen in the art.
An art therapy assessment can suggest possible traits of certain diagnoses, delays in developmental stages, possible coping mechanisms, resistence or blocks to the therapy process as well as possible strengths.
This information will be used to further the therapy process or make recommendations for treatment.
Please be aware that an art assessment is not fortune telling. There is no crystal ball! One thing or color might mean something very different for each indidivudal. Everyone has different experiences that foster the way one sees the world. This will be brought out in one's art and can be seen by a trained art therapist only to further growth and the therapy process.
I have experience in providing clinical supervision to graduate level students. Supervision is an essential part of becoming a therapist and continuing professional and personal growth. I am able to provide supervision for those seeking the ATR status or working towards LPC. Supervision provided is individual supervision; however, if there is enough interest group supervision may occur periodically. For more information about supervision please contact me directly.
Consultation for Autism Spectrum Disorders
I have over 10 years of experience working with children who have been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. However, the spectrum is large and each child is unique.
I will meet with the individual to assess symptoms and behaviors. I may provide parents with checklists to complete to further understand your child. After the assessment I will determine if I am able to counsel through my private practice or if I feel additional services would be best. I am familiar with the early intervention process as well as several in-home wrap around (BHRS) programs in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas and will review various processes with you. I will also assess parents needs to see what kind of support is needed.
I am currently in network with the following insurances: Highmark Blue Shield, Capital Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Optum Behavioral Health, Magellan (Please inquire about details if you have a plan managed by Magellan, as there are several different types of plans. Or check with your insurance company directly to see if I participate. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about your insurance plan and my participation.
I am willing to work with families however possible to make therapy a realistic option.
