ART THERAPY SERVICES

COUNSELING

Whether you are seeking a further understanding of yourself, the world around you, or struggling with a mental health diagnosis, counseling may be the experience for you. Counseling can take place individually, with couples, with children or with families.  I use a variety of counseling techniques depending on each individual's needs.  Some techniques used in therapy include, but are not limited to, Play therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy,  Art Therapy, Creative Writing, Family Systems approaches and Psychotherapy.

ART THERAPY

Art Therapy is defined by the American Art Therapy Association as:

a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client’s functioning and his or her sense of personal well-being. Art therapy practice requires knowledge of visual art (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms) and the creative process, as well as of human development, psychological, and counseling theories and techniques.

Art therapy helps people resolve conflicts, improve interpersonal skills, manage problematic behaviors, reduce negative stress, and achieve personal insight. Art therapy also provides an opportunity to enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of art making.    www.arttherapy.org, 2014

Because sometimes words are too challenging or just not enough!  For more information about the art therapy process please contact me.

ART THERAPY ASSESSMENTS

During an art therapy assessment you may be asked to draw a series of drawings using provided media, or you may be asked to make art spontaneously.

The assessment involves observations of the art making process as well as the content and quality seen in the art.

An art therapy assessment can suggest possible traits of certain diagnoses, delays in developmental stages, possible coping mechanisms, resistence or blocks to the therapy process as well as possible strengths.

This information will be used to further the therapy process or make recommendations for treatment.

Please be aware that an art assessment is not  fortune telling.  There is no crystal ball! One thing or color might mean something very different for each indidivudal.  Everyone has different experiences that foster the way one sees the world.  This will be brought out in one's art and can be seen by a trained art therapist only to further growth and the therapy process.
